SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College softball team (6-13) split a Sunday doubleheader against St. Lawrence (9-9) at Alexander Field, winning Game 1, 9-1 in five innings before falling 6-0 in Game 2.
In Game 1, sophomore
Lindsay Cohen went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, junior
Alyssa Wolejko had three RBIs, and sophomore
Allyson Staats was solid on the mound, allowing one run on six hits in five innings pitched while striking out three on the afternoon for the win.
St. Lawrence's Chelsea Cavellier homered in the top half of the first inning to give the Saints in the top half of the first inning, but Union scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings to put the game out of reach early.
Wolejko's RBI groundout tied the game in the first inning, plating Cohen, and
Molly O'Brien, who reached on a double, scored later in the inning on a passed ball.
In the second inning, Cohen doubled in a run with the bases loaded, and Wolejko drove in two with another double later in the frame to make it 5-1 Union.
Junior
Aimee Palleschi had a run-scoring triple and junior
Kristin Schmidt had an RBI single in the third inning, while senior
Samantha Chevalier added a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning to round out the scoring for the Dutchwomen.
In Game 2, St. Lawrence's Kyle Plimpton pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering five hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out nine to lead the Saints to the 6-0 win.
The Saints scored four unearned runs on four hits in the second inning to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Natasha Bell and Cavellier had RBI singles in the inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Caitlyn Welsh and Audra Caine added back-to-back two-out RBI doubles, chasing Union starting pitcher
Sarah Logan from the game.
Union will host SUNY Plattsburgh in a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
