Men's lacrosse set for Liberty League Semifinal at No. 1 seed RIT

 SCHENECTADY, NY - No. 4 seed Union (8-6, 3-3 LL) clinched a bid to the Liberty League Playoffs for the sixth consecutive year with a 15-8 win over Skidmore on Senior Day on April 27.

Under the guidance of head coach Paul Wehrum, Union has the No. 2 scoring offense in the league at 9.50 goals/game, one of the top man-down units in the league at 76.9%, and is one of the top defensive teams at 7.98 goals allowed/game. Union will take on No. 1 seed RIT (14-2, 6-0 LL) in a rematch of last year's Liberty League Championship Game.

The Tigers are bolstered by the league's top offensive unit (14.88 goals/game, No. 10 NCAA) which includes the nation's best man-up offense (0.53), a stellar defense (6.81 goals allowed/game, No. 21 NCAA), and a top goaltender in sophomore Pat Johnston (14-2, 6.39 GAA, .662 save %).

» Adam Sands earns Liberty League First Team honors
Union College sophomore defenseman Adam Sands earned Liberty League First Team honors. Sands was one of seven student-athletes named to the Liberty League All Star Teams announced today.

Senior midfielder Kyle Christine, junior attack Rob Santangelo and junior midfielder Nate Greenberg earned second team honors, while senior attack Nolan Connors, senior midfielder Alex Stone and junior defenseman Shawn Joyce earned honorable mention.

» The Last Meeting
On April 17, senior attack Nolan Connors and junior attack Nate Greenberg each had two goals and an assist, but men's lacrosse fell, 14-7 to No. 3 RIT at Frank Bailey Field.

Liberty League leading scorer Kyle Aquin scored five goals and teammate Jack Kryzton added four goals and an assist to lead the RIT offense. RIT goaltender Pat Johnston made 14 saves, while his counterpart in net, Stefan Basile, made five saves for the Dutchmen.

Senior midfielder Alex Stone had nine ground balls to lead both teams. For the game, Union outshot RIT, 44-32, but the Tigers held a 29-28 advantage on ground balls and 13-11 edge on faceoffs.

» The Union-RIT Series
Today's game will mark the 12th meeting between Union and RIT in men's lacrosse. RIT owns a 8-3 advantage in the all time series against Union.

Union is in search of its first win over RIT since March 8, 2008, when the Dutchmen earned an 8-3 win over the Tigers at Frank Bailey Field. RIT joined the Liberty League in 2012, winning the league title last year and making it to the NCAA Quarterfinals before falling 15-13 to Tufts.

» Stone is Rock Solid on Faceoffs
Senior midfielder Alex Stone is one of nation's top faceoff men at 57.8% (149-for-258) for the season and is second in the Liberty League (27th NCAA) with 7.71 ground balls/game. Last season, Stone earned Liberty League Short Stick Specialist Honorable Mention.

»Nolan Connors on a Roll
Senior attack Nolan Connors, who leads Union with 19 goals on the season, has been at his best during the second half. Connors has recorded 16 goals in his last seven games, including a career-best five goal effort in a 15-8 win over Skidmore on Senior Day last Saturday. Connors is four goals shy of his single-season high of 23 goals set last season.

» Connors and Stauffer Earn Liberty League Weekly Honors
Senior attack Nolan Connors and freshman attack Nolan Stauffer earned Liberty League Men's Lacrosse weekly honors, the league announced on Monday. Connors earned Offensive Player of the Week, while Stauffer was named Rookie of the Week. Connors was outstanding in wins over Vassar and Skidmore last week. He had a goal and an assist in a 21-8 win at Vassar on Wednesday. Against Skidmore, Connors recorded a season-best five goals to lead the Dutchmen to a 15-8 win.

Stauffer led all Union players with five points (two goals, three assists) in the win over Vassar. On Saturday against Skidmore, Stauffer had two goals to help Union earn the 15-8 victory.
