ROCHESTER, NY -- The University of Rochester scored four runs in the fourth to take the lead and added three in the fifth en route to a 7-2 win over Union College in the first game of the 2013 Liberty League Softball Championship Tournament at UR's Southside Field Friday afternoon.
The top seed Yellowjackets, 21-17, play either #2 RPI or #3 St. Lawrence tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. The #4 Dutchwomen, 16-24, face the loser of the RPI/St. Lawrence game Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
Rochester was held to four hits but scored seven unearned runs in the victory. Brittany Grage allowed four hits and two earned runs while walking one and strikeing out five for her 12th win.
Alyssa Wolejko gave up just two hits in four innings and struck out seven for Union, while
Allyson Staats gave up two hits and struck out two with three runs in two innings of relief. Palleschi had hits of the day.
Union took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Staats led off the inning with a single, and went to second on a passed ball. Palleschi then blasted her fifth homer of the season over left. But that was the last hit allowed by Grage, who retired all batters except for
Samantha Chevalier in the sixth, who reached on an infield error. Grage had retired 11 straight batters after the homer, then after the error, retired the final four Union batters to wrap up the victory.
Grage led off the fourth with a single, and went to third when Taylor Fravel reached on an infield error. Fravel stole second, then after a strikeout, Lauren Muni tried a squeeze but that an infielder threw over the catcher, and both Grage and Fravel scored for a 2-2 game. Rachael Roddenberry walked, then on a double steal attempt, she stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error while Laurelle Byrne-Cody (who pinch ran for Muni), scored. Stephanie Brunet closed out the scoring wiht a sacrifice fly to bring home Roddenberry and it was 4-2 Yellowjackets after four.
Rochester scored three in the fifth, as Sarah Wetson then went to third on an outfield error that put Nina Korn to second. Both came home on the 12th home run of the season by Gena Bradford-Tume, who homered to right after two outs for the 7-2 lead and eventual final.
