Field hockey loses league opener to Rochester, 6-1

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Michelle Relin scored three goals and assisted on another to lead the University of Rochester to a 6-1 victory over host Union College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Yellowjackets improved to 5-1 overall after winning their league opener, while the Dutchwomen fell to 1-4.

The Yellojackets also got goals from Allison Resnick and Nicole Cerza, with a goal and assist from Gina Cunningham. Rochester, an NCAA quarterfinal playoff team a year ago, had 40 shots while the Dutchwomen were held to 10 shots on net.

Molly McCune made 16 saves for Union while Madison Wagner stopped two in over 57 minutes and Tara Lamberti made two saves in just under 13 minutes for Rochester. The guests had 17 corners to Union's five.

Nicole Merigliano gave the Dutchwomen a 1-0 lead just 56 seconds into the contest. She took a pass from Ali Flake and tucked it in the left post. But 2:01 later Cunningham scored from the middle to tie it, and Relin gave the Yellowjackets the lead at 27:26 on a penalty stroke goal and it was 2-1 Rochester at the half.

The Yellowjackets broke it open with three goals in under three minutes. Resncik's goal from a Relin pass at 49:25 was followed at 51:38 by Relin's second of the day, from Cunningham. Cerza scored at 52:08 unassisted and under five minutes later (57:06) Relin capped the hat trick.

Union continues a long homestand with a September 18 6 p.m. game vs. Williams at Frank Bailey Field.
