Dutchwomen dominate 6-0 in exhibition with Ottawa

SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College women's ice hockey team claimed a 6-0 victory in an exhibition matchup against the Ottawa Jr. Senators. Four Dutchwomen scored in the first period to give Union a commanding lead.

Union jumped out to a fast start when Elizabeth Otten tucked the puck past Senators goaltender Shawlee Gaudreault on a wraparound attempt. The first goal of the season was assisted by Christine Valente and scored at the 5:22 mark of the first period. 

The Dutchwomen weren't done tacking on an early lead as they scored their next two goals only 55 seconds apart. On the first goal Mac Purvis took a pass from Jamie Smith and buried it into the back of net. Then after a scramble in front of the net, Kathryn Tomaselli poked in a rebound that came from the foot of teammate Jessica Kaminsky. Courtney Turner also registered an assist on the play. In total the Dutchwomen tallied three goals in just under three minutes of action.

Junior Alex Tancrell-Fontaine gave the Dutchwomen a four goal lead at the 13:28 of the first period. Bryanne Panchuk and Rebecca Babiak picked up the assists on the goal. Junior goaltender Shenae Lundberg made nine saves in her only period of action.

Madeleine Dahl replaced Lundberg in the second period as the Dutchwomen opened up their bench. Dahl made six saves in the period as Union was unable to capitalize on their 14 shot attempts. The period ended with the Dutchwomen leading 4-0. 

Union tacked on another goal midway through the third period as Rebecca Babiak picked up her second point of the game after burying the feed from senior captain Ashley Johnston. Valente picked up her second assist of the game on teh the goal. The Dutchwomen added one last goal as Stefanie Thomson added her first goal of the game to give the Dutchwomen the 6-0 win. 


Freshman Emma Pincott picked up three saves in relief of Lundberg and Dahl. The three goaltenders tallied 18 saves in the combined shutout.

The Dutchwomen will open up will open up the regular season when they travel to Conneticut  on Sept. 28 for a matchup with Uconn at 2pm.
