SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- The Skidmore College women's soccer team opened Liberty League play with a 1-0 win over Union College,
Tuesday night at Wachenheim Field.
The Thoroughbreds have won six straight and are 6-0-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Dutchwomen are 2-3 and 0-1.
The lone goal came at
18:39 when Jen Wardyga fed a rebound to Arena Manning who put it home for her second goal of the year. Union goalie
Allison Brustowicz made the original save off a Morgan Governale shot, but Wardyga was able to collect the rebound and dish it quickly to Manning.
The Dutchwomen had a quality chance in the 31
st minute when
Breana Derella had a restart from the top of the box that sailed just over the net. Union also managed to put pressure on the Thoroughbred defense in the game's final minute, but Skidmore held on for the win.
The Thoroughbreds had a commanding 19-7 shot advantage. Gab Lawrence had one save for her fourth shutout of the season. She hasn't allowed a goal in her last 278:20. Brustowicz had 10 saves.
Union is at league rival Bard Saturday at 2 p.m.
