Union Splits Matches Against Widener and Baptist Bible in Opening Round of Bomber Invitational

SCHENECTADY, NY- The Union College women's volleyball team split their matches in the opening round of the Bomber Invitational by defeating Baptist Bible and falling to Widener.

The Dutchwomen opened up the tournament against Widener, who is coming off a 16-16 2012 campaign. Union opened the match in strong fashion taking the first set 26-24 in dramatic fashion as senior Marissa Vollmer recorded an ace to end the set. Then Vollmer and her teammates fell in two close sets by scores of 23-25. Widener finished off Union by winning the fourth and final set 25-18.

Sophomore Rachel Wyman recorded 15 kills while Vollmer tallied 30 digs in addition to her set-winning ace. Sophomore Freshman Amanda Price recorded 22 assists and 10 digs while fellow freshman Ally VanDoren recorded four kills and 19 digs.

Union quickly bounced back from the first match-defeat by dominating Baptist Bible College in straight sets. The Dutchwomen finished the Defenders in only 45 minutes with set scores of 25-8, 25-6, and 25-13. The team had a .431 attack percentage with match-high of .583 in the first set. Union also recorded a season high 14 aces.

Wyman tallied two solo blocks to go along with her five kills. Freshman Lauren Gibson led the Dutchwomen attack with eight kills on 18 attempts. Price led the team in aces with 4 and assists with 14.

Union looks to carry the momentum from their latest win into their two matches tomorrow against Oneonta and tournament hosts Ithaca. Union was undefeated against both squads a year ago. Game times are at 1:15 and 3:30.
