Five hit for double figures in Dutchmen's 79-74 win over 9-1 Vassar



SCHENECTADY, NY -- Terell Winney had 16 points and Ryan Whelpley posted another double double to lead the Union College men's basketball team to a 79-74 victory over visiting Vassar College at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday. The Dutchmen evened their Liberty League record to 1-1 (4-6 overall), while the Brewers, who came in winners of nine of their 10 games, fell to 1-1 in the league.

Winney made eight free throws and had three assists, and Whelpley recorded a team high 12 rebounds with 11 assists. For the sophomore, it was his third straight game with a double double and his fourth of the season. He is averaging 12.3 rebounds and also 12.3 points over his last three contests. William Hython scored a season high 15 and Deshon Burgess added 14 points for the Dutchmen. Union had just three turnovers in the contest and forced 20 turnovers by the guests, and the Dutchmen shot 40%.

Alex Snyder also had a double double for the Brewers, with 15 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Johnny Mrlik scored 20 with six boards and Erikson Wasyl added 14 with Curtis Smith scoring 12. Vassar outrebounded the hosts, 42-33.

Union had a 38-28 hafltime lead and also led by 10 at 16:17 of the second half, 47-37 on a Weckworth layup. The Brewers went on a 10-1 run over the next 3:12 and trailed just 48-47 after a free throw by Mrlik completed a three point play. Vassar later took the lead at 70-68 on a three pointer by Wasyl with 4:38 to play. But Winney answered with a three at 4:06 and Union never relinqueshed the lead, making seven free throws in the final 2:12 to ice the victory.

The Dutchmen host Clarkson next Friday at 8 p.m. then play at Skidmore Saturday at 4 p.m.
