SCHENECTADY, NY -- Kelly Legg had a double double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to pace St. Lawrence University to a 55-50 women's basketball victory over Union College in Liberty League action at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Saints, 4-5 overall, won their league opener while the Dutchwomen, 7-3 overall, fell to 0-2 in league play.
Kara McDuffee scored a team high 13 points and Caroline Dalton had 10 for the Saints, who had a 46-33 rebounding advantage for the night. Cassie St. Hilaire added seven and the Saints shot 36%.
Union was led by
Kate Thompson, who tallied a season best 18 points with seven boards.
Brittney Kenney had a season high nine boards with her eight points and
Amy Loya scored eight with four assists for the Dutchwomen. Union shot 30% and forced 25 turnovers. Thompson has scored 62 points in the last four games (15.5 avg.).
St. Lawrence had a 31-25 lead at halftime with a 32-16 rebounding mark. St. Lawrence led for most of the second half, with a high of six at 48-42 with a free throw by McDuffee with 4:25 left. But Union got four points from Loya and a layup from Thompson and tied it at 48-48 with 2:40 remaining in the second. Thompson made two frees with 1:55 left for Union's first lead of the half, 50-48. Butr a three pointer by Legg at 1:36 and a jumper by Caroline Dalton made it 53-50 Saints with 33 seconds left. McDuffee made two free throws in the final second to provide the 55-50 final.
Union returns to action Saturday at home against Liberty League rival Vassar at 2 p.m.
