SCHENECTADY, NY -- Freshman guard
Natalie Leone scored a career high 14 points but the Union College women's basketball team lost to Vassar College, 64-56 at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. The Brewers improved to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchwomen fell to 7-4 overall and 0-2.
Amy Loya had 12 points and a team high six rebounds and
Kelsey McDonald scored 11 for the Dutchwomen.
Kate Thompson added seven for Union, which shot 44%.
Vassar was led by Cydni Matsuoka, who scored 15 with five assists before fouling out late. Caitlin Drakley (12), and Michaela Janowski (10 and Allyson Pemberton (also 10) joined Matsuoka in double figures. The Brewers outrebounded the Dutchwomen, 41-30, led by 15 boards by Hannah Senftleber. Vassar shot 40% for the game.
Union had a six points lead at halftime, 32-26, holding Matsuoka to four points. Union got the lead up as high as eight with a Leone layup at 12:18 to make it 46-38. After a jumper by Loya at 8:49, the Dutchwomen had a 50-43 lead. But the Brewers went on a 8-0 run over the next 3:29 for a 51-50 lead featuring four points by Janowski. The largest lead came with eight seconds remaining on two free throws by Janowski to provide the 64-58 final.
The Dutchwomen continue Liberty League home action next Friday against Clarkson at 6 p.m., then play Saturday at Skidmore at 2 p.m.
