Hython records double-double in double overtime winner over Clarkson

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College men's basketball sophomore forward William Hython recorded a double-double  in the Dutchmen's 91-84 double overtime win over Clarkson on Friday night. With the win the Dutchmen improve to 5-6 and 2-1 in Liberty League play.

Hython registered 20 points and 17 rebounds in 42 minutes for the Dutchmen. Freshman point guard Kevin Weckworth led the Dutchmen in scoring with 25 points but also added two assists, two rebounds and a steal.

Two other players, Deshon Burgess and Terell Winney, recorded double digit point totals in the game. Burgess was only one rebound away from a double-double. Senior captain Brian DeBisschip tallied eight points on his birthday.

The two teams battled through the first half, with the Golden Knights taking a slight lead (35-34) into halftime. Weckworth did most of his damage in the first half, recording exactly half of the Dutchmen's points (17).

The teams continued to play it close down the stretch. A late layup by Burgess gave the Dutchmen a lead with 58 seconds left but the Golden Knights responded by hitting two timely free throws to tie up the game at 73.

After letting the Dutchmen get out to the lead in the first overtime, the Golden Knights once again hit two timely free throws in the final minute to knot the game at 79.

The second overtime was all Union. The Dutchmen roared out to the first six points, thanks to two layups by Hython and one by Ryan Whelpley. The Dutchmen held on after making their final minute free throws for the 91-84 final.

The Dutchmen shot 44.6% from the field on their 74 attempts. They hit only three of their 13 three point attempts but went 22-27 from the charity stripe.

The Dutchmen return to action tomorrow when they travel to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore in their first matchup with the Thoroughbreds of the season. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
