SCHENECTADY, NY -- Joe Gibbons scored 20 points and Richie Bonney had a double double with 16 along with 10 rebounds as Hobart College improved to 7-1 in the Liberty League with an 82-64 men's basketball win at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Statesmen now stand 13-4 overall, while the Dutchmen, 2-4 in league play, fell to 5-9.
Trey Blanding added 15 points and Connor Rehbaum scored 13 while Andre Hoy dished out six assists for the Statesmen. Hobart shot 57% for the night, including 62% in the second half when the visitors made 16 of 26 shots. Hobart also outrebounded the Dutchmen, 37-25.
Union was led by
Terell Winney's 18 points while
Ryan Whelpley scored 13 and
Deshon Burgess added 10 points with a team high seven rebounds. Union shot 43% for the game.
Hobart and Union were tied at 23-23 after a layup by Union's
Keith Callies with 5:34 remaining in the first half. But Hobart went on a 11-2 run over the next 4:10 featuring six points by Gibbons. The Statesmen took a 37-28 lead into halftime as Bonney and Hoy had 10 points each at the break.
Union pulled to within seven (37-30) on a
Kevin Weckworth jumper 51 seconds into the second half, and at 18:31, trailed by seven again (39-32) after two free throws by Whelpley. But over the next 4:09, a 12-3 run opened it up to a 51-35 lead. The Statesmen led by as many as 21 with 4:18 left at 76-55.
Union's busy week continues with Liberty League games Friday and Saturday. The Dutchmen play Friday at RPI at 8 p.m. and then return home to the Viniar Athletic Center to host Bard Saturday at 4 p.m.
