COBLESKILL, NY -- The SUNY Cobleskill women's basketball team opened the 2014 portion of their schedule on Tuesday evening by dropping a 66-44 decision to the visiting Dutchwomen of Union College in non-league action at the Lorio Gymnasium. With the loss Cobleskill falls to 1-8 overall on the season to date while the Dutchwomen improve to 7-2 on the campaign.
The Dutchwomen displayed a deep and diversified attack with 12 different players finding their way into the scoring column led by junior forward
Kate Thompson, who led all scorers with 17 points to go with eight rebounds and two blocked shots on the evening. Union also displayed a powerful attack in the paint dominating the backboards by a 55-to-31 margin including 23 offensive rebounds.
Brittney Kenney and
Amy Loya added seven points each for Union, which had a 37-25 halftime lead.
Cobleskill received a strong outing from freshman guard/forward Shelby Preston, who scored 15 points, grabbed eight rebounds and passed out three assists in the contest.
The Fighting Tigers will return to action on Saturday January 11 when they host the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton with tip-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. while Union will next play host to the Saints of St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action on Friday January 10 at their Viniar Athletic Center in Schenectady, N.Y. beginning at 6:00 p.m.
