Field hockey loses late at WNEC, 3-2

SPRINGFIELD, MA -- Senior co-captain Megan French scored the game-winning goal on a penalty stroke with nine seconds left in regulation to lift host Western New England to a 3-2 win Saturday evening over Union College in non-conference field hockey action at Golden Bear Stadium. The Golden Bears snapped a three-game losing skid to improve to 4-8 on the season while the Dutchwomen slip to 4-7.

Freshman Michelle Carlson also scored twice for Western New Hampshire, who held leads of 1-0 and 2-1. Laura Aptowitz made eight saves in nearly 70 minutes for Union while Grace Trupe stopped 10 for the Bears.

Michelle Carlson opened the scoring with an assist from French at 10:37, but Union tied it 8:04 later on Sarah Medd's seventh of the season. Carlson notched her second and her fifth of the fall at 43:05 but Union tied it on Hannah Najar's third goal with an assist from Laura Pacheco.

Union had a 17-12 shot advantage and 10-8 in penalty corners.

The Duitchwomen host Vassar in a Liberty League game on October 15 at 6 p.m.
