SCHENECTADY, NY - Senior netminder
Shenae Lundberg stopped 33 shots as the Union College Dutchwomen picked up their first win of the season, defeating UConn 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. The shutout, Lundberg's fourth of her career, moves her into sole possession on the all-time list, breaking a tie she held with four previous Union goaltenders. Fellow senior
Christine Valente tallied the lone goal for the Dutchwomen as they improved to 1-3-0.
Valente gave Union all the offensive support they needed in the contest as the captain put the "U" on the board at the 9:47 mark of the opening period. After
Haley Welch fired a shot on goal, Valente was able to corall the loose puck from the scrum in front and knock it in for her first goal of the season. Freshman
Caitlyn McLaren picked up her first collegiate point on the play as the rookie defensemen was credited with an assist along with Welch.
The Garnet and White also came out strong defensively from the first drop, limiting the Huskies to just five shots in the first period after UConn totaled 21 in the opening stanza yesterday.
Lundberg and the rest of the Dutchwomen remained tough on defense during the final two periods despite being outshot 28-11. The Huskies had several chances to knot the game up in the third including their best chance when a heavy volume of shots were thrown at Lundberg during a powerplay midway through the period but she remained solid in goal and Union was able to kill it.
The Dutchwomen will return to the ice next weekend as the host Penn State for a weekend series. The puck will drop at 7:00 PM on Friday night followed by a 2:00 Pm start on Saturday.
