CANTON, NY --  Senior Erica French capped off a two-player rush with the eventual game-winning goal just 3:51 into the game and sophomore goalkeeper Julia Hudson made a key save on a penalty corner early in the second half as St. Lawrence University completed a weekend Liberty League field hockey sweep with a 2-0 win over Union at North Country Field on Saturday.
 
The Saints, who upset Vassar on Friday in overtime, improve to 7-9 overall and finish 2-4 in league play. Union is 5-10 overall and 1-5 in league play after Saturday's loss and will play at Babson on Tuesday.
 
French and sophomore Anna Hughes broke into the Union defensive zone on a fast break and French neatly redirected Hughes' pass inside the left post for her second goal of the year to give the Saints the early lead. Hughes then scored her fifth of the season in a scramble in front of Union goalie Laura Aptowitz, putting away a second rebound at the 20 minute mark of the game.
 
The Saints outshot Union 7-2 and had a 6-1 advantage in corners in the first half, but the Dutchwomen had a chance to get right back into it when Hudson fell on the ball and Union's Alexa Steriti was awarded a penalty stroke 3:34 into the second half. Steriti tried to go high to the left post, but Hudson made a diving stop, knocking the ball aside with her blocker to preserve the shutout.
 
Hudson finished with seven of her eight saves in the game in the second half as Union had a 10-7 edge in overall shots and a 4-2 edge in penalty corners in the second half, but couldn't crack the scoreboard. Aptowitz finished with nine saves for Union as SLU outshot the Dutchwomen 14-12 overall and had an 8-5 advantage in corners for the game.
