Babson wins non league field hockey game, 5-1

BABSON PARK, MA — Senior Caroline Malone had career highs of three goals and six points, and Babson College opened up a three-goal first-half lead en route to a 5-1 victory over visiting Union College in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday night at MacDowell Field.

With its second consecutive win, Babson is now 10-9 overall, while Union drops to 5-11 on the year.

First-year Elise Towers contributed a goal and an assist for the Beavers, while sophomore Corinne Urisko (Princeton, N.J.) notched the first marker of her career. Sophomores Kelsi McDougle and Staci Swallow, as well as first-year Jacki Merrigan each chipped in with one assist.

Urisko got the hosts on the board with her tally off a penalty corner just 1:56 into the contest. McDougle settled the insert from Swallow and Urisko blasted home her shot from the top of the arc for a 1-0 lead. Towers gave the Beavers a two-goal edge with her third goal of the season at the 9:50 mark, and Malone followed with her first tally of the night 18:02 into the match, tipping in a feed from Merrigan, to make it 3-0.

Babson wasted little time adding to the lead after halftime as Malone struck for her 11th goal of the year just 37 seconds into the stanza to make it 4-0. Dutchwomen first-year goalkeeper Laura Aptowitz made three second-half stops on Towers to stay within striking distance, including back-to-back saves around a penalty corner in the 60th minute. Malone capped the scoring for the Green and White in the 64th minute though, completing her hat trick by tipping in a shot in front of the cage after a scramble.

Union avoided the shutout by earning a penalty corner in the waning seconds and taking advantage of its final scoring opportunity of the night. Beavers' junior goalkeeper Kayla Costa made a great save on the initial shot by junior Laura Pacheco, but sophomore Alexa Steriti blasted the rebound into the back of the cage to make it 5-1 with no time remaining.

Costa finished with three saves for the Green and White, while Aptowitz made six of her seven stops in the second half. Danika Hornick, who came on with 6:51 to go in the contest, turned away the only shot she faced for the Dutchwomen.

The Beavers finished with a 23-8 edge in shots and an 11-7 advantage in penalty corners. Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson will host MIT in its regular-season finale on Saturday at 12 p.m., while Union concludes its year with a 5 p.m. start at Morrisville State.
