Union Loses, 8-2, to Western Michigan in Shillelagh Championship

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Union fell behind early and couldn't recover in losing 8-2 to Western Michigan in the championship game of the 5th Annual Shillelagh Tournament, hosted by Notre Dame at the Compton Family Ice Arena.  The eight goals were the most surrendered by Union dating to an 8-0 loss to Colgate on Feb. 16, 2008.

WMU's Nolan LaPorte recorded a hat trick, Justin Kovacs assisted on five goals and Sheldon Dries produced four points (2 goals, 2 assists) as the Broncos remained unbeaten versus the Dutchmen in five meetings (3-0-2) all-time.

The game was dominated by special teams.  WMU scored five times on the power play, while Union finished 2-for-10 on the man-advantage.  A total of 22 penalties for 60 minutes were called.

Union finished with a 42-32 shot advantage, as freshman Roman Ammirato scored his first collegiate goal. Defenseman Jeff Taylor added his fourth goal of the season to earn a spot on the all-tournament team.

Western Michigan exploded for four goals in the first period, scoring three times in a span of 3 minutes and 28 seconds to force a change in net as Alex Sakellaropoulos replaced Colin Stevens.  The 17th-ranked Dutchmen closed the gap to three goals, but weren't able to draw any closer the rest of the game.

Union resumes ECAC Hockey action next weekend (Dec. 5-6), traveling to Brown and Yale.
