BOSTON, MA - One game after posting a career-high 58 saves against Quinnipiac, senior goaltender
Shenae Lundberg one-upped herself, registering 59 stops as she and the Union College Dutchwomen blanked Northeastern 1-0 on Tuesday night inside the Matthews Arena in Boston, MA.
Lundberg was outstanding throughout the 60 minutes to earn her fifth career shutout. She routinely made big save after big save to keep the Huskies off the scoreboard. The senior was not the only who stepped up for the Dutchwomen.
The entire defensive unit was tremendous as they blocked a season-high 37 shots. A total of 14 Union players disrupted at least one shot in the game, led by freshman
Erica Kelly and juniors
Jamie Smith and
Jessica Kaminsky who all blocked four a piece. Union (2-10-2) completely frustrated a Northeastern squad that came into the contest winners of four of their last six, including a win over then-ranked #6-Boston University during that span.
Junior Kathryn Tomaselli provided the lone goal of the game as she scored with 4:37 remaining in the opening period. NU tried to clear the puck but it deflected off of a Dutchwomen and right to Tomaselli, who beat the Huskies' netminder one-on-one from close range to put the Garnet and White in front 1-0. The goal was Tomaselli's 18th of her career, moving her into a tie for seventh all-time. Kelly had a chance to increase the lead moments later but her shot was foiled as it drilled the post and sailed away from the net.Freshman Hannah Erickson also had an opportunity to pad Union's lead in the second period as the Dutchwomen had a 2-on-1 chance but Erickson could not get her stick on the crossing pass to deflect it into the net.The win over the Huskies marks the first time in school history that Union has defeated Northeastern (6-8-3) in seven meetings between the schools. The victory also snaps Union's nine-game winless streak.
The Dutchwomen will look to keep the momentum rolling as they host ECAC-foes Yale and Brown this Friday and Saturday. The puck will drop against the Bulldogs at 7:00pm on Friday night followed by a 4:00pm start time with the Bears on Saturday afternoon.
Game NotesThe 59 saves by Lundberg were the most ever in a shutout at the NCAA Division 1 level since the 2000-01 season which marked the inaugural NCAA women's hockey championship.
