SCHENECTADY, NY - The Dutchwomen got off to the quick start on Friday night, scoring just 25 seconds into the game but were not able to hang on to the early lead as they fell to Yale 4-2.
Kathryn Tomaselli netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season on Union's first shot of the game. After a Yale turnover in the Union zone, Nicole Rusell slid a crossing pass to Tomaselli on the 2-on-1 break, who was able to get just enough on the puck to knock it home to give the Dutchwomen the early 1-0 advantage.
Union would hold onto the one goal lead until the 13:59 mark of the opening period when Yale's Phoebe Staenz set up Kaitlin Gately with a pass from behind the net. Gately was waiting right in front of
Shenae Lundberg was able to put it in to tie the game at 1-1. The Bulldogs were able to tie it up 33 seconds later as Eden Murray redirected in a shot from Kate Martini.
Elizabeth Otten had a chance to tie it up at the end of the first period as she rifled a slapshot on goal but was denied.
Union had another great opportunity midway through the second as
Christine Valente had a breakway but was turned away on the great save by Yale's Jaimie Leonoff.
The Bulldogs would break through at 16:41 in the second as Janelle Ferrara was able to chip in the puck over Lundberg to give Yale the 3-1 advtange on the short-handed goal.
However,
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine quickly responded for the Dutchwomen scoring less than a minute later. Tancrell-Fontaine got off a shot from the slot from
Kathryn Davis and
Jessica Kaminsky that went just under the arm of Leonoff to bring Union to within one.
But Yale would find the score column just 24 seconds later as Jamie Haddad knocked in the pass from Phoebe Staenz to give the Bulldogs the 4-2 lead.
With a minute gone by in third, Tomaselli almost made it 4-3 but her shot nailed the post. Kaminsky had the last great scoring chance for Union in the final period as the junior had two close range shots stuffed before her third shot on the rebound sailed wide.
Lundberg was pulled with 1:24 remaining but Union could not find the back of the cage with the extra skater. After posting 58 and 59 saves in the past two contests, Lundberg recorded 25 stops against Yale on Friday.
The Dutchwomen will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host Brown at 4:00pm.
