Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Union Edged by UConn at Frozen Holiday Classic

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Webster Bank Arena has been the site of many memorable triumphs for Union College. Saturday was not one of them.

In the team's first appearance in the harbor town since last year's NCAA regional championship, Union saw a 2-1 lead slip away in a 3-2 loss to Connecticut at the Frozen Holiday Classic. It also marked the Huskies' first-ever win in the series (totaling 12 games) and snapped Union's 11-game win streak against Hockey East opponents dating back two years.

Union will face Sacred Heart in the consolation game tomorrow at 3 p.m.  The Pioneers lost to UMass-Lowell, 5-1, earlier in the day.

After hitting the post twice in the first period (on shots by Matt Wilkins and Spencer Foo), Union captalized on two play opportunites in the second period to claim a 2-1 advantage.

On video review, Daniel Ciampini was credited with his team-leading 10th goal of the season.  Vecchione assisted on the play, then scored his own power play goal 1:09 later on a hard snap shot from the left circle that beat goaltender Rob Nichols over the shoulder.  Vecchione extended his points streak to seven games, as did Jeff Taylor by assisting on the play.

Trailing, 2-1, UConn rallied behind goals from Cody Sharib at 18:03 of the second period and from Spencer Naas, who provided the game-winning goal on a one-timer in the slot off a pass from Kasperi Ojantakanen at the 10:13 mark of the third period.

UConn opened scoring with Patrick Kirtland's goal at 16:35 of the first period.
