Union Moves Back into First Place with 4-3 Win at Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Union College moved back into first place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Clarkson Saturday evening at Cheel Arena. The Dutchmen (17-6-3/11-3-0) have now won 11 of its last 12 meetings against Clarkson (16-10-2/9-5-0).

Max Novak became the ninth Dutchmen to score two goals in a game this season, helping Union rally from a two goal deficit.

Novak tallied a power play goal at 9:05 of the third period to knot the game at 3-3 before Matt Wilkins provided the game-winner at 12:34, knocking in a rebound off the back boards for his first goal since Dec. 7.

"It was an unbelievably gutsy effort from our guys," said acting head coach Joe Dumais.  "Daniel Carr led a group of guys that really stepped up for us.  They (Clarkson) scored early, but our guys never quit."

Down 2-0, Union struck twice in a span of 35 seconds during the second period.  Daniel Carr and Shayne Gostisbehere connected on passes that led to Daniel Ciampini breaking in alone in the slot, and he finished a high wrister for his 10th goal of the season.  Gostisbehere, a Hobey Baker candidate, extended his points streak to four games while Carr continues to lead the squad in scoring with his 26th point.

Novak's first tally of the night followed shortly thereafter with a shot from the left circle.  Union closed the period with a pair of spectacular saves from Colin Stevens, who kept the Dutchmen in the game with 25 saves.

The Golden Knights received two goals from their defensive corps.  Junior James Howden gave Clarkson its last lead of the night (3-2), just 1:01 into the third period, collecting a turnover along the boards and whipping a quick shot from atop the right circle that found the corner of the net.

Fellow defenseman Paul Geiger buried a wrister from between the circles with traffic in front of  the goal 2:16 into the opening period on Clarkson's first shot of the game.

Jeff DiNallo made it 2-0 at 7:13 of the second period, jamming home an airborne puck that fluttered off the glove of Stevens.

Union returns home to host Brown next Friday (Feb. 7) at Messa Rink.
