SCHENECTADY, NY -- J.P. Regan scored a game high 18 points and added eight rebounds as the Rochester Institute of Technology men's basketball team pulled out a 77-73 overtime victory at Union College's Viniar Athletic Center Tuesday night. The Tigers stand 14-7 overall and 8-4 in the Liberty League, while the Dutchmen are now 6-12 overall and 3-7 in league play.
Gabe Nicasio scored 14 with four assists and Brendan Reindert and Miguel Lopez scored 10 points each for the Tigers. Lopez also dished out five assists and RIT held off a rally by Union after leading 40-27 at the half. The Tigers shot 40% for the game and recovered in OT after being held to 29% shooting in the second half.
Union's
William Hython posted his fourth double double of the season. He had team highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds, and
Terell Winney and
Deshon Burgess scored 15 points each for the hosts.
Ryan Whelpley pulled down eight of Union's 48 rebounds, helping to have a six board lead at the end of the night. Union made one shot from the floor in OT and wound up 38% for the game.
The Tigers led by 15 52 seconds into the second half, and by 13 as late as 14:32 remaining after a three pointer by Jameel Balenton made it 49-36. But the Dutchmen came storming back and produced a 17-5 run capped by a
Ray Bethel jumper making it 54-53 RIT. It was a five point lead by the guests at 4:41, but Union took the lead at 62-61 at 2:46 on a Hython layup. The treams traded two point baskets and with 1:25 left, Nicasio's three gave RIT a two point lead at 66-64. Union tied on a Whelpley bucket at 53 secodns at 66-66, but Nicasio made his second free throw at 42 seconds for a 67-66 lead. Union knotted it at 67-67 on a

With 4:24 left in OT, the Dutchmen led by four at 71-67, but the Tigers went on a 7-1 run for a 74-72 lead with 1:20 left after a Kamron Davis bucket. RIT never trailed the rest of the way and wrapped it up late at the line.
Union is right back on the home court Wednesday night at 8 p.m. for a league game against Bard. This contest was originally scheduled for February 1.
