SCHENECTADY, NY -- Natalie Leone scored a career high 15 points and 11 players got on the scoreboard as the Union College women's basketball team downed Bard, 52-43 in a Liberty League contest at the Viniar Athletic Center Wednesday night. The Dutchwomen improved to 13-7 and 5-6 in league play, while the Raptors fell to 1-20 overall and 1-12 in the league.
Leone made seven of eight free throws and
Cailin Schmeer scored nine points while
Brittney Kenney added eight.
Kristin Schmidt pulled down a team high seven rebounds for Union, and was a key factor in the 41-30 rebounding edge over the Raptors.
Bianka Bell led Bard, tying Leone for a game high 15 points, and Tytravia Riley had 13 with a game best nine rebounds. Joanna Regan had seven boards for the Raptors, who shot 32% for the game.
Union had a torrid first half, hitting at a 52% pace, to take a 34-16 lead into the break. The Dutchwomen scored the first 12 points of the game and led by as many as 20 twice, 30-10 with 5:56 left on a Schmeer layup and 32-12 after a Leone layup at 3:50. In the second half, A riley three made it 34-21, as the Raptors kept Union scoreless in the half for the first 5:47. The Raptors were with 10 at 43-33 with 5:12 to go before a 5-0 run in the next 2:09 for the Dutchwomen, featuring three points by Leone. Bell's layup with 21 seconds left got Bard as close as seven at 50-43, but Schmidt converted two free throws with six seconds left to wrap up the triumph.
Union hits the road for the next three games, all in Liberty League play. This weekend features games Friday at Bard, as the Dutchwomen and Raptors play for the second time in three days. Union is at Vassar Saturday.
