SCHENECTADY, NY -- Cailin Schmeer scored a career high 25 points and
Amy Loya tallied 21 to lead the Union College women's basketball team to a 75-69 win over Skidmore College at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. The Dutchwomen improved to 15-9 on the season and 7-8 in Liberty League play, while the Thoroughbreds now are 10-14 and 5-10 in the league.
Kate Thompson had her seventh career double double for the Dutchwomen. She scored 13 points with 11 rebounds and also recorded five blocks. Union shot 53% for the game including 55% in the first half, when they took a 37-34 lead into the half. Loya also had six rebounds and
Kelsey McDonald dished out eight assists.
Jordyn Wartts led Skidmore with 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Angela Botiba had 15 points with 14 rebounds as the guest had two performers with double doubles. Molly McLaughlin had 16 points and six assists and Lindsey Davis added five boards. Skidmore shot 35% and 72% from the line.
Union outscored Skidmore 20-12 in the paint in the first half. In the second half, it was a two point game with 10:57 left after a Molly McLaughlin jumper pulled Skidmore closer at 52-50. But the Dutchwomen broke open the contest with a 14-2 run over the next 5:46. During that hot streak, Loya and Schmeer accounted for 12 of those points with six points each. The Dutchwomen never trailed by less then six the rest of the contest.
Union hosts RPI Saturday at 2 p.m. The Dutchwomen will honor seven seniors prior to their final game of the season.
