NEW HAVEN, C.T. – Union College senior forward
Stefanie Thomson tallied twice to fuel the Dutchwomen to a 3-1 win over Yale on Friday night at Ingalls Rink. With the win, the Dutchwomen improve to 9-19-1 and 4-13-0 in ECACH play.
Thomson moved into second place in program history for career power play goals by registering her eighth on the Dutchwomen's opening goal. The power play goal was her seventh in the nation pulling her into a tie for the nation lead.
Junior goaltender
Shenae Lundberg was tested early as she racked up five saves in the first five minutes of the game. Getting into the early groove helped her throughout the period as she kept the Bulldogs of the scoreboard after tallying 13 saves.
Thomson broke the scoreless tie midway through the first period when she tallied her nation-leading seventh power play goal of the season. She was set up on the point by leading-scorer senior
Maddy Norton and junior
Christine Valente.
The Dutchwomen extended their lead seven minutes later on a five-on-three power play. Norton took a blue-line feed from junior Alex Tancrell-Fotnaine and blasted a shot that deflected off a defender and past the goaltender's outstretched glove. Valente tallied her second assist of the game after feeding Tancrell-Fontaine from the corner.
Thomson added her second goal midway through the third period when she picked up a rebound in front and maneuvered past the goaltender to fire a wrist shot into the back of the net. Valente added her third assist of the game after taking the initial shot on goal. Sophomore forward
Kathryn Tomaselli also recorded an assist on the play.
Yale broke up the shutout as Haddad wristed a shot past Lundberg's outstretch blocker. They tried to extend their lead with over two minutes remaining when they pulled Leonoff in favor of the extra attacker. The Dutchwomen made it interesting with 36 seconds left when junior forward
Bryanne Panchuk headed to the box for hooking to give Yale a two-man advantage. Lundberg made another flurry of saves down the stretch to keep Yale from getting any closer as she ended the game with 28.
The Dutchwomen return to action tomorrow when they go for the season sweep of Brown at 4 p.m.
