Union splits season series with Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Union College women's hockey team split their season series with Brown after falling to the Bears 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. With the loss the Dutchwomen fall to 4-14-0 in league play and 9-20-1 overall.

Senior forward Stefanie Thomson tallied her third goal of the weekend as the lone tally for the Dutchwomen. With the goal, Thomson pulled into a tie with sophomore Kathryn Tomaselli for the team lead in goals with 11.

Union grabbed the lead early when senior forward Stefanie Thomson grabbed a rebound in the slot and buried a shot past the reaching glove of Brown netminder Aubree Moore. Junior forward Christine Valente tallied her 13th assist of the season after taking the initial shot on net. Sophomore Jamie Smith also received an assist on the play.

Brown tied the game late in the first period when Jessica Hoyle buried a one-time shot on a two-on-one rush. Hoyle lifted the puck past Lundberg's blocker as she was sprawling across the crease. Kaitlyn Keon set up the goal with the one-time dish. Lauren Vella also received an assist on the play as she hit Keon with the outlet pass.

Brown broke the tie early in the second period when Monica Masucci buried a rebound off a shot from Janice Yang. Samantha Woodward also tallied an assist on the play.

Union spent much of the second period on the penalty kill but was able to keep Brown from widening their lead as the period ended with the Dutchwomen trailing 3-0.

Back and forth play and few whistles characterized the third period and the Dutchwomen attempted a comeback. Union continued to pressure the Bears down the stretch as they pulled Lundberg with 1:58 remaining in the third period in favor of the extra attacker. Despite a few chances, including one that glanced off the pipe, the Dutchwomen were unable to tie the game.

Lundberg finished the game with 25 saves on 27 shots while her counterpart Moore finished with 26 saves on 27 shots.

Union was unable to capitalize on their one power play while they killed off all six Brown power plays.

Valente led the Dutchwomen in the faceoff circle with 11 wins as the Dutchwomen edged the Bears 27-24 in the category.

The Dutchwomen return home for their final home games of the 2013-14 season with matchups against Colgate and Cornell on Friday and Saturday.
