Dutchwomen down Clarkson, 54-52 to improve to 12-6

POTSDAM, NY -- One free throw each from Amy Loya and Kate Thompson in the final 15 seconds proved to be the difference as Union College outlasted the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team 54-52 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights fell to 8-11 overall and 3-8 in the Liberty League. Union improved its standing in the conference at 4-5 and moved to 12-6 overall.

Up by just one point with 13 minutes to go, Union went on a 17-4 run over the next eight minutes, including a run of four straight free throws by Cailin Schmeer after a foul and two technical fouls gave her six chances at the free throw line with 7:09 to go in the first half. Union's lead of 13 would shrink to nine at intermission,

In the second half, Union was up by eight points with 16:24 remaining, but Clarkson slowly rallied back. The Knights took the lead at 9:41 on a 3-pointer from Cara Manfredi giving Clarkson a modest 42-41 advantage. A pair of free throws from Brooke Butkovsky with 4:08 to go gave Clarkson its last lead, 48-47, as Union again came back to take the lead. A Butkovsky layup with 24 seconds to go tied the game, but a foul at the other end gave Loya an opportunity to put Union ahead, and she converted one of her two free throw attempts. A missed jumper for Clarkson ended in a scrum in the paint and the Dutchwomen had the possession arrow and the ball. Another free throw by Thompson made it a full-possession contest and Clarkson was unable to make its 3-point attempt as the buzzer expired.

Sophomore Ashley Loggins finished with a game-high 18 points and added in nine rebounds, shooting 7-for-9 from the floor. Manfredi also tossed in 16 points for Clarkson. For Union, Kelsey McDonald had 13 points and four assists and Kate Thompson produced 11 points and seven rebounds.

The Dutchwomen return home Tuesday night to host RIT in Liberty League play and host Bard Wednesday in the make up of the February 1 scheduled game. Both contests are at 6 p.m.
