AUBURNDALE, F.L. - The Union College baseball team swept their matchup with the University of Chicago by matching scores of 3-2 on Monday morning at Myrtle Lake Park.
In the first matchup, freshman
Greg Geisel threw seven innings in his first career start. Geisel allowed two runs while striking out nine and allowing five hits. Geisel pitched the entire scheduled seven innings before exiting in the bottom of the eighth with the game tied.
In game one, the Dutchmen opened up the scoring in the third inning when
Logan Schulte recorded his first career base hit and later scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning senior
Sam Caruso singled to left field to drive in
Anders Goetz.
Chicago would add a run in the fourth before tying the game in the bottom of the seventh when Connor Bartleman singled up the middle to score William Katzka.
Freshman
Jake Fishman continued his excellent start to the season by doubling to left center to allow
Sam Caruso to score the winning run in the top of the tenth inning.
Chris Donovan picked up his first win of the season after three innings of relief work. He allowed only one hit while striking out two.
In game two the Dutchmen recorded 12 base hits in another 3-2 decision. Freshman
Kent Curran, also pitching in his first collegiate start, pitched a complete game while allowing only 2 runs. Curran struck out five while allowing seven hits. The defense helped Curran by ending three separate innings on ground ball double plays.
On the offensive side, Caruso led the charge by recording four base hits including a single to left field in the fourth inning that knocked in what proved to be the game-winning run scored by
Joe Bradlee.
The Dutchmen continue their participation in the RussMatt Invitational with a matchup with #15 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 4 p.m
