Hennel leads softball's sweep over Oberlin, Wellesley

CLERMONT, FL -- The Union College softball team won a pair of contests in action Wednesday in Florida. The Dutchwomen defeated Oberlin, 11-0 in six innings, then pulled out a 1-0, eight inning victory over Wellesley to improve to 5-3 on the season.

In the opener, Union racked up 16 hits and put the game away with a six run sixth inning. Alyssa Wolejko allowed just three hits in the shutout, striking out six without walking a batter. Allyson Staats, Molly O'Brien and Dani Hennel each had three hits and Staats had three RBIs. Union scored four in the third and added another in the fourth. Aimee Palleschi and Camille Corbin each had two RBIs.

Hennel and Staats were the stars in the nightcap. Hennel's sacrifice fly scored pinch runner Laura Aptowitz with one out in the bottom of the 10th to lift the Dutchwomen over Wellesley. Staats outdueled Amber Braun in the pitching department. Staats' shutout victory featured no walks, six strikeouts and just six hits allowed in her eight innings. Braun gave up just five hits while walking two and striking out four in her 7 2/3 innings of work.

Staats continues to swing a red hot bat in the Florida sun. She is batting .658 (15 for 23) with 19 RBIs and 27 total bases in seven games. Wolejko is equally hot in her pitching with a 3-0 mark and no earned runs allowed in 20 1/3 innings.
