ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Union College suffered its first loss since opening day with an 8-7 setback to top-ranked RIT in a Liberty League game held at the RIT Turf Field. The loss halted Union's win streak at 10 games, and marked the first league setback of the season.
Paul Wehrum's squad now stands 10-2 overall, 3-1 in the Liberty League. RIT, meanwhile, remains perfect on the season, improving to 14-0 and 4-0 in league play.
Union opened scoring at 9:33 of the first quarter to take its only lead of the game.
Adam Rosenthal (9th) used a bounced shot to beat goaltender Pat Johnson, who finished with 15 saves. On the other end, Dutchmen keeper
Stefan Basile kept the nation's third-highest scoring team off the board for 10 minutes until Eddie Kiesa (10th) scored from within close range to make it 1-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Union traded goals with RIT for much of the game, falling behind by three goals on two occasions (5-2 and 8-5), only to rally back to within a goal both times.
Tom Stanton notched a hat trick (three goals) to keep Union in the game while Basile recorded 16 saves in net to hold the Tigers to their lowest offensive output of the season.
The "U" scored twice in the final minute of the game, including
Paul Alberti's (3rd) man-up tally with six seconds left, but the Dutchmen could not score the equalizer.
Tyler Wisman led the Tigers offensively with three goals. Union held RIT's top three scorers -- Casey Jackson (39 goals), Kyle Aquin (32) and Ryan Lee (30) -- to just one goal on the day.
Union will host Vassar in the regular season home finale this Saturday (April 19) at 1:00 p.m. at Frank Bailey Field.
