Dutchwomen 6-1 in league after 14-12 OT win at RIT



ROCHESTER, NY – The RIT (4-8, 1-5 Liberty League) women's lacrosse team lost to visiting Union College (8-5, 6-1 Liberty League), 14-12 in double overtime on Friday afternoon.

Emily McGrail led Union with six points on six goals. Maggie Comiskey tallied seven points on two goals and five assists. Natalie Sullivan tallied three points on two goals and an assist. Jen Hughes picked up the win in net for the Dutchwomen making 13 saves. Sage Sarkis led RIT with three goals. Nicole Bingo and Ashleigh Caruso each scored two goals for the Tigers. Sarkis added two assists, while Carly Payerl added an assist. Caitlin Conway took the loss in net, making 11 saves.

RIT outshot Skidmore, 31-26, while Union won the ground ball battle, 41-25. Each team won 15 draw controls apiece, while RIT went 21-of-27 on clearing attempts. The Tigers were 4-of-7 on free position attempts and committed 24 turnovers.

Both teams battled to a 6-6 tie in the first half. Jackie Hagopian gave Union a 1-0 lead at 27:29 of the first half off a fee from Comiskey. Mandell tied the score at 1-1 on her 13th goal of the season at 26:27 of the first half. Sarkis took a feed from Payerl at 19:53, giving RIT a 2-1 lead. After a Comiskey goal, tied the score at 2-2, Caruso scored her 13th off an assist from Sarkis at 14:33 giving RIT a 3-2 lead. Three straight goals from Comiskey, Haley Gould and Jessica Farland gave the Dutchwomen its largest lead of the half, 5-3 with 7:32 to play in the opening half. The Tigers answered right back with three straight goals from Bingo, Caruso and Sarkis giving RIT a 6-5 with 55 seconds to play. Sullivan tied the score at 6-6 on a free position goal with 33 seconds to play in the first half.

McGrail opened the second half scoring with two straight goals, giving the Dutchwomen an 8-6 lead at 27:48. Sarkis made it 8-7 Union with 27:21 to play in regulation. McGrail scored the first five goals of the second half for Union, tallying two straight at 20:58 and 19:11 respectively, giving Union an 11-8 lead. Trailing 12-9, RIT cut the Union lead to 12-10 on Francis' fourth goal of the season, scoring off a nice feed from Sarkis. Bingo converted a free position chance with 15:01 to play, making it 12-11 Union. Leone tied the score with 9:58 to play converting a free position chance, tying the score at 12-12.

Both teams had great chances down the stretch, but both goalies were outstanding. Hughes made four saves in the second half for Union, including two inside the last two minutes to keep the game tied. Conway came up with some key saves down the stretch to keep the game close. Sullivan gave Union a 13-12 lead with 33 seconds to play in the first overtime. McGrail scored with 2:24 in the second overtime to seal the 14-12 win for Union.

The Dutchwomen play at the University of Rochester Saturday.
