Egan records three hits; Dutchmen defeat Williams



SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union College sophomore outfielder Eric Egan registered three base hits in the Dutchmen's 7-6 victory over Williams on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Central Park C Diamond. With the win the Dutchmen improve to 19-8-1 on the season while Williams falls to 10-15.

Egan went 3-4 with a run batted in and a run scored. The outfielder also doubled and swiped a base in the contest.

The Ephs would take the early lead in the top of the first inning when Jack Roberts hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Luke Pierce. Union would answer in the second with two runs to take the lead. Senior captain Vincent Esposito scored on a wild pitch while junior infielder C.J. Worley placed a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Egan.

The Dutchmen would widen their lead in the third inning when freshman infielder Jake Fishman scored on a wild pitch. Williams cut the lead to one in the top of the fourth when David Webster doubled to left center field to score Nathan Micha.

Union would tack on two runs in the sixth inning when Jake Fishman grounded to the short stop to allow senior infielder Joe Bradlee to score. Later in the inning Worley would score on a wild pitch, their third wild pitch run of the game.

The Ephs would make it interesting in the top of the seventh when Jake Cloud singled to left center to score Matt Kastner. A wild throw from infielder Anders Goetz would allow Beau Horan to advance from third to give Cloud two runs batted in. Luke Pierce finished the inning by singling to right field to score Cloud to tie the game at 5-5.

Egan would give the Dutchmen the lead in the bottom of the seventh when he singled to left field and scored freshman pitcher Kent Curran. Union would widen their lead to 7-5 when Fishman scored on another Ephs wild pitch, their fourth and final wild pitch run of the game. The run proved to be the game winner as senior pitcher Andrew Beaule allowed one run in the top of the ninth inning before inducing a game ending 6-4-3 ground ball double play to end the contest.

Curran threw 6.2 innings for the Dutchmen allowing five runs, two of them earned while striking out three and walking six. Beaule picked up the win after replacing Curran with two outs in the seventh inning. He pitched 2.1 innings allowing one earned run, striking out two and walking one. For the Ephs, Charlie Baxter was charged with the loss after throwing the wild pitch that allowed Fishman to score. Luke Rodino started the game for the Ephs and pitched four inning, allowing three earned runs and walking two. Eddie Kelly and Jacob Slater also made pitching appearances for Williams.

Fishman went 2-5 with a run batted in and two runs scored. Caruso, Bradlee, Worley and senior captain David Peretti also collected hits for the Dutchmen. Horan recorded two base hits while Cloud led the Ephs with two runs batted in.

The Dutchmen return to action tomorrow when they travel to Ithaca to take on SUNYIT at 3 p.m.
