SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Union College baseball freshman pitcher
Jake Fishman picked up his third win of the season as the Dutchmen swept Liberty League foe St. Lawrence in 2-1 and 7-1 decisions on a Saturday afternoon double header at Castle Diamond Park. With the wins the Dutchmen improve to 7-3-1 and 3-0-1 in league action.
Fishman allowed only one run in his second straight complete game performance. He pitched all seven innings, allowing only four hits while striking out seven batters. The freshman outdueled Saints senior pitcher Joe Riley, who was undefeated heading into the matchup.
Both teams picked up runs in the second inning to open up the scoring. Freshman infielder
Logan Schulte drilled a single over the third baseman's head to score fellow freshman
Kent Curran. St. Lawrence answered in the bottom half of the second when Kevin Brindle launched a solo home run over the left field wall.
The Dutchmen broke the tie in the top of the seventh when senior captain
David Peretti singled over the second baseman to score Schulte. Fellow senior Vincent Espostio tried to stretch the lead to two but was tagged out after a rifle from Saints outfielder Brian Magovney. Fishman finished out the scheduled seven inning game by striking out the final batter to secure the Dutchmen's 2-1 victory.
In game two the Dutchmen posted four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. Senior pitcher
Dane O'Neil struck out five batters in six scoreless innings of work to keep the Dutchmen ahead. The Dutchmen added two more runs in the top of the eighth as freshman pitcher
Greg Geisel tossed two scoreless innings to bring the Dutchmen to the ninth inning. Senior
Andrew Beaule took the mound in the ninth inning and allowed only one run on a single by pitch hitter Adam Reichel that scored outfielder Mark Syron. Beaule finished off the Dutchmen's big win with a strikeout.
Over the 16 innings of play the Dutchmen went 17-57 (.298), swiped four bases and batted in nine runs.
The Dutchmen return to action tomorrow morning with a nine-inning rematch with the Saints at Castle Diamond Park. First pitch is scheduled for 9 a.m.
