SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team lost its first league game of the season in a 7-1 loss to St. Lawrence on Sunday morning at Castle Diamond Park. With the loss the Dutchmen fall to 7-4-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in Liberty League play.
The Saints tagged the Dutchmen for four runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Freshman pitcher
Devin Martin walked the first run home after loading the bases. Saints catcher Devin Robson followed that by doubling to left field which scored Kevin Prindle and Khifer O'Connor. The final run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly to center field that scored outfielder Brian Magovney.
The Dutchmen tacked on their only run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Dutchmen loaded the basses after two base hits by senior captain
David Peretti and sophomore infielder
Jeff Grasso. Freshman designated hitter
Jake Fishman reached on an error by the Prindle at first base. Freshman infielder
Logan Schulte lifted a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Peretti.
The Dutchmen were able to produce five hits on the day, including a double by junior infielder
Anders Goetz. Senior captain
Vincent Esposito tallied a hit for the third consecutive game in the matchup.
Martin pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six runs and striking out three. Senior
Andrew Beaule and junior
Chris Pignatello also saw action on the mound. Both struck out one batter a piece.
The Dutchmen return to action on Tuesday night when they play their first home game of the season at Central Park Field against MCLA. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
