Softball comes back for 6-4 win over Rochester in tourney

ROCHESTER, NY -- Trailing 4-0 without a hit through the first five innings, the Union College softball team exploded for six runs in the final two innings for a 6-4 comeback win over the University of Rochester in the Liberty League Tournament at RPI's Dorison Field Thursday. The Dutchwomen improved to 22-11 while the Yellowjackets fell to 22-11.

The Dutchwomen will play RPI at 10 a.m. while Rochester faces Skidmore at 12:30 p.m. RPI defeated Skidmore earlier in the day, 6-0. Rochester entered the tournament ranked #1 in the NCAA Div. III Northeast Region.

Rochester had a 4-0 lead through five innings and Brittany Grage had not allowed a hit. Tayler Fravel led off the Rochester first inning with a single to center and stole second. After two straight strikeouts, Eleni Wechsler doubled to center to score Fravel. Muni then hit her fourth of the season over the left field fence for the three run lead.

Union threatened in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Wolejko reached on an error at short but was forced out at second on a fielder's choice by Allyson Staats. Joanna Chalifoux was safe on a dropped infield fly ball and Staats was at second. But Grage got an infield ground out to end the threat. The Yellowjackets added another run on the fifth of the year from Grage, a solo one out shot to left in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth inning, Rochester had the bases loaded with none out, as Fravel reached on an infield error, Meghan Hennessy singled beating out a bunt, and Korn walked. But Staats got Wechsler to line out to left and struck out the next two batters to keep it at 4-0.

After that, the game completely turned around for Union. In the top of the sixth, the Dutchwomen sent nine batters to the plate and tied the contest at 4-4. Dani Hennel broke up the no hitter with a single to center. Aimee Palleschi walked then Alyssa Wolejko singled up the middle to drive in Hennel and the runners adavanced on the throw to the plate. Allyson Staats singled in Palleschi and an error in the outfield brought in Wolejko and put Staats to second. An infield fielder's choice got the runner trying to get back to second, and after another fielder's choice infield out put Camille Corbin at first, Lindsay Cohen singled. Kristin Schmidt's grounder to second became an error that scored Corbin to tie it at 4-4.

After Staats kept Rochester scoreless in the botom of the sixth, Union plated two in the seventh. Hennel led off this inning with a single and was bunted over to second. Wolejko then reached on an infield error (the fourth in two innings for Rochester), and Staats had a two run double to left center to give Union the 6-4 lead. Staats got the Yellowjackets 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to cpmplete the epic tournament victory.

Staats finished with two hits and three RBIs. She improved to 11-5 with the eight hit complete game, striking out six. Hennel also had two of Union's six hits. Grage allowed six runs, four earned, and fell to 11-6.

RPI swept Union during a regular season doubleheader at Robison Field.
