TROY, NY -- RPI scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to comeback for a 6-5 win over Union College in the Liberty League Softball Tournament Friday at Doris Robison Field on the RPI campus. The Engineers improve to 24-16 and will play for the championship Saturday at 10 a.m. Union, which had a five game winning streak snapped, fell to 22-12 and plays Rochester or Skidmore at 3 p.m. today.
Union led all the way into the bottom of the seventh.
Camille Corbin hit her league leading 10th home run of the season with a two run shot to center in the second inning, also scring
Allyson Staats. The Engineers scored their first run in the fifth inning, as Union starter
Alyssa Wolejko had allowed just two singles through four shutout innings. With two outs, Kathleen Baker singled to left and stole second. Morgan Kollmeier singled to center to score Baker to make it 2-1.
Union made it 4-1 in the top of the sixth. With one out, Staats walked.
Joanna Chalifoux singled and Corbin reached on a feilder's choice with Staats out at third base.
Lindsay Cohen then singled to center scoring Chalifoux, and
Kristin Schmidt's hit dropped into shallow center to score Corbin. But the Engineers scored twice in the sixth. Tori Hunt singled to left and went to second on a wild pitch. Jena Servideon doubled to right to make it 4-2 and after a strikeout, Morgan Ten Eyck's RBI single to center brought in Servidone, and it was 4-3 Union after six innings.
The Dutchwomen added insurance in the top of the seventh.
Dani Hennel singled and went to second on an error by the center fielder on the play. After a strikeout, Allysa Wolejko singled to center putting Hennel at third. After a strikeout, Chalifoux singled to left to bring in Hennel, and the top of the seventh ended with a 5-3 Union advantage.
But like the Union win over Rochester when the Yellowjackets made errors in late innings, the Dutchwomen also had errors to contribute to the RPI comeback. Baker opened the inning reaching on an infield error. Kollmeier reached on a fielder's choice and Baker was safe at second on a throwing error. Danielle Balestrini bunted and reached on another infield error that brought home Baker. Kollmeier was out trying to tie the game at 4-4 on a wild pitch, but Union got her at the plate. After a Hunt walk, and an out, with runners on second and third and one down, Taylor Ten Eyck won it with a double off the top of the left field fence, scoring Balestroni and Hunt for the 6-5 RPI victory.
Hunt and Baker had two hits and starter Kristina Weltzin gave up eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, with four earned runs and seven strikeouts with two walks for RPI.
Wolejko fell to 11-7 on the year, with eight hits and three earned runs in 6 2/3 innings. She walked two and struck out three. Chalifoux had two of Union's nine hits and Wolejko's seventh inning single gave her an 18 game hitting streak entering the game shceduled later in the day against Rochester or Skidmore.
