Box Score TROY, NY – Erin Riley scored five goals to lead Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to a 15-8 victory over Union College in the 2014 Liberty League Women's Lacrosse Championship Game Saturday at Renwyck Field. The Engineers won the title for the third straight season and are now 12-4, while the Dutchwomen finish with a 9-7 mark.
The teams each produced 29 shots, and RPI had 18 ground balls to Union's 15. Union was 14 for 20 on clears and the Engineers were 14 for 17.
Jen Hughes made 10 saves for the Dutchwomen while Erin Amarello made 12 stops.
RPI's Marissa Page opened the scoring from Erin Riley's pass from the side, and Page made it 1-0 at 28:13. It was her 22
nd of the season, and she was open in front after the feed from her left. Erin Masucci made it 2-0 at 18:44 when she came in through a crowd from the left of the net and went high for her seventh of the year.
Union got on the board at 16:50 when
Jessica Farland scored her 12
th of the year. She came from the left through the defense and to the right, in tight, and went high with her shot into the cage. Riley got the two goal lead back at 15:32, coming from behind the net around the left side for her 28
th score of the spring, and it was 3-1 RPI. Just 32 seconds later, Rachel Schofield gave RPI a 4-1 advantage. She was very tight to the right and came out in front with a quick release for her 20
th score. With 13:42, Riley scored her second of the day and #29, coming out high to the right, 15 yards out and driving in the Engineers' fifth goal. Riley was behind the net and found Erin DeLucca in front, who had a quick release and score at 8:09. It was her ninth of the year and gave the hosts a 6-1 lead. Riley came in quickly off a free position save from her netminder, racing down field and notching her third of the game at 7:06. It was her 32
nd, and she came in close and scored high for a 7-1 RPI lead. Riley made it 8-1 with 5:59 left on a pass to the front from Schofield, getting her fourth goal of the day.
Schofield had a free position and got her 21
st at 4:34. She faked a shot then came in closer and scored from the right side and it was 9-1.
Ciara Dudeck scored at 1:47, getting her 28
th of the season to make it 9-2. She broke through the defense and scoring right outside the crease for Union. Then with 33.7 seconds left,
Laura Pacheco scored on a free position, her sixth goal of the season, and the Dutchwomen pulled to within three. But Riley got her fifth goal of the half on a free position, and her 32
nd came with just 16 seconds left to play in the half. But right before the buzzer,
Emily McGrail scored her 55
th of her junior year, racing in close and scoring high, and it was 10-4 Engineers at halftime.
RPI had a 10-8 ground ball advantage at the half, and was eight for 10 in clears while Union was eight for 12. RPI had won nine of the 14 draw controls in the first 30 minutes. RPI had 17 shots to Union's 14.
The first goal of the second half didn't come until 16:24 left, when Lydia Wolter scored her third of the season for RPI. She deked her way in tight and went high and right for an 11-4 Engineers lead.
Jackie Hagopian made it 11-5 at 14:59, her 25
th of 2014. She came across the net and scored close and from the left. Just moments later at 14:30, Hagopian came around from the right side and scored #26 and pulled the Dutchwomen to within five at 11-6. But Jamie Wakefield scored her 27
th for RPI and it was back up by six at 12-6. She charged in on the left and went right with her scoring shot. At 13:05, on a free position attempt, Hagopian scored again. This one came from a pass from
Jessica Farland high over the defense and the quick release gave the freshman her third of the day and her 27
th of 2014, making it 12-7. Suddenly, at 12:36, it was 12-8 RPI as Hagopian's shot went in off a defender for her fourth goal, all coming in the second half.
But Schofield got a pass right in front and as she was checked she scored her third of the game. At 9:51 she deked and went right for a 13-8 RPI lead. Hughes received a card and had to come out after that score, replaced in the Union net by
Jessica Malinconico. Schofield's fourth came at 7:56 as Hughes then came back in. Wakefield dished out in front and Schofield notched her 23
rd of the season as it became 14-8 RPI. Wakefield's second of the game came in front from a pass from Michelle Denny for a 15-8 RPI lead with just 5:08 to play in the second half.
Maggie Comiskey, Hagopian and Hughes made the All-Tournament Team for Union. The game marked the final game of the Union College careers of seniors
