Fishman leads Union to 8-1 win over Vassar in Liberty League tourney

LOUDONVILLE, NY -- Jake Fishman struck out eight through eight innings to lead Union College to an 8-1 victory over Vassar College in the 2014 Liberty League Baseball Tournament at Siena College Field Thursday afternoon. The Dutchmen, 23-9-1, face Rochester in a winner's bracket game at 1 p.m. Friday, while the Brewers face Clarkson at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

Fishman improved to 7-0 in his freshman season. He allowed three hits and one earned run. Union had 10 hits, including two each from Vinny Esposito and Anders Goetz, and two RBIs each from David Peretti and C.J. Worley. Vassar had four hits on the day. Starter Adam Erkis lost for the first time in eight decisions, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings.

Fishman and Worley were locked in a pitchers' duel with a scoreless game into the bottom of the sixth. Union got the first run of the day in that inning. Bradlee had a one out single and after an infield groundout, Logan Schulte doubled down the left field line to bring in Bradlee and Union led 1-0 after the sixth.

The Dutchmen opened it up in the seventh. Union scored five runs that came on two hits and three Brewers errors. The scoring was capped by a squeeze play by Worley with both runners from second and third on the move, thus a sacrifice bunt that featured two RBIs. Union added two more runs in the eighth with a one out two-run single to left center by Peretti.

Union and Rochester have not met this season.
