LOUDONVILLE, NY -- Brendan Garry drove in all three runs and Josh Schulman pitched two hit ball for 7 2/3 innings to lead the University of Rochester to a 3-0 victory over Union College in the 2014 Liberty League Baseball Tournament at Siena College Field Friday afternoon. The Yellowjackets, 25-14, enter the championship round Saturday at 11 a.m. Union, now 23-10-1, faces Vassar at 4:30 p.m. today.
Schulman and Union's
Dane O'Neil were locked up in a major pitcher's dual, with both hurlers pitching no-hit ball through six innings. O'Neil got the first two batters out in the top of the seventh, but Lance Hamilton got the first hit of the game with a clean single down the right field line. After Tyler DeClerck was hit by a pitch, Garry drilled a two-run double into left center for a 2-0 Yellowjacket lead.
Rochester added a third run in the ninth. Ethan Sander was hit by a pitch and was bunted over to second. After a walk and an infield groundout, Garry then singled in Sandler for the 3-1 lead. C.J. Worley got Union's first hit with a two out single in the seventh. The Dutchmen were held to three hits by Schulman and closer Evan Janifer, who recorded his ninth save and second in two days. Union finished with three hits and the Yellowjackets had four.
If Rochester wins the 11 a.m. game against Union or Vassar, the Yellojackets will win the league championship and automatic bid. If the Dutchmen or Brewers win the morning game, a winner-take-all title game will take place 45 minutes after the first game Saturday.
