NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Union College volleyball program began its' 2014 season with a pair of wins over St. John Fisher and Babson College in the opening day of the NYU Labor Day Invitational.
The Dutchwomen swept St. John Fisher in the opener and defeated Babson in four sets to begin the season 2-0.
Union almost let a 19-13 lead escape them in the back-and-forth first set against St. John Fisher as the Cardinals used an 11-5 rally to tie it at 24-24. However, a kill by senior Rajpreet Dhaliwal and an attack error provided the Dutchwomen with the 26-24 win. Union then made quick work of St. John Fisher in the next two sets, winning 25-18 and 25-17 to start the 2014 season with the 3-0 victory.
Junior Rachel Wyman led the way with eight kills and Dhaliwal added seven of her own. Sophomore Kat Moeller had a match-best 21 digs while her classmate Amanda Price led the Garnet and White with 17 assists and was second on the squad with 10 digs to help Union pick up the win.
Babson put up a fight in game two as all four sets were decided within five points. Union won the first set 25-20 before falling in set two 25-21. The Dutchwomen then won 25-22 and 25-23 in the final two sets to defeat the Beavers 3-1.
Junior Lauren Woods tied a match-high with nine kills to pace Union. Fellow junior Kelley White added eight more and was one of four Dutchwomen to record double-digit figures in digs including Moeller who racked up 21 more digs to lead both teams. Price contributed with a team-high 15 assists.
Union will conclude the NYU Labor Day Invitational with two more contests tomorrow, starting at 11:30am.
