ROCHESTER, NY -- Two second half goals lifted the University of Rochester field hockey team as it continues its perfect start to the 2014 season, beating visiting Union College 2-0 at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The two teams battled to a scoreless first half, battling tough wind and rain throughout.
Rochester (5-0, 1-0 Liberty League) was able to get on the board early in the second period when Fisher tapped in a loose ball two yards in front of the Dutchwomen cage. Senior Gina Cunningham made a long run up the left side of the field and dribbled around Union keeper Laura Aptowitz freeing up Fisher for the easy goal and 1-0 UR lead.
UR's leading scorer Michelle Relin boosted the Yellowjacket lead to 2-0 in the 45th minute when she slipped a shot past Aptowitz on the right side off a pass from the post by freshman Olivia Denny.  Relin and junior Nicole Cerza set up the play with back-to-back shots from the endline that we turned away.  Relin has scored in all five Rochester games this season.
Union's Rachel Andreana nearly put the Dutchwomen (1-3, 0-1 Liberty League) on the board with a shot from the top of the circle in the 51st minute.  Her shot made it through the UR defense, but was stopped by UR goalie Tara Lamberti.  Lamberti gave up a rebound, but the follow up attempt was swatted away by the Yellowjacket defense.
Cunningham nearly notched her second helper of the game with 13 minutes remaining in the game, but her cross from the right side was not corralled by freshman Claire Dickerson at the back post. A Rochester green card late gave Union a player advantage, but theDutchwomen were unable to get a shot off in the final three minutes as UR hung on for the 2-0 victory.
Lamberti picked up the shutout making four saves in the Rochester cage while Aptowitz turned away five shots for Union.
The Yellowjackets return to Fauver Stadium hosting Hartwick College on Wednesday at 4 pm.  Union hosts New Paltz on Tuesday in its home opener of 2014.
