SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union kept its 2014 record perfect with a 2-1 non-conference win over SUNY New Paltz on a cool evening at College Park Field. The 12th-ranked Dutchwomen improved to 6-0, while avenging a one-goal loss to the Hawks on the road last year.
Mollie Gilchrist figured in both goals, scoring just eight minutes into the contest when she headed a ball into the net after
Whitney Bickford's shot bounced off the goal post. Gilchrist then setup
Breana Derella's game-winning goal in the 75th minute on a play that originated on a long ball from
Jenna Cornwall. Derella chipped a shot from 15 yards out that floated over the head of goalkeeper Katelyn Cordero.
New Paltz (6-2) pulled even at 1-1 on Sarah Painter's low shot from inside the box at 25:09. The Hawks nearly scored again in the first half, but Skye Kaler's shot was blocked by defender
Aly Leahy, who was standing in front of the net. New Paltz threatened in the closing minute, as a scrum ensued in the goal crease before play was whistled dead on a foul.
Union continues its homestand this Saturday, hosting SUNY Brockport at 5 p.m.
