SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Union opened Liberty League action Tuesday night with a 1-1 double overtime tie against Skidmore at College Park Field.
After a quiet first half in which the Dutchwomen placed just one shot on goal, the 'U' offense heated up in the second half. Rookie
Katie Monahan tied the contest at 1-1 in the 48th minute, accepting a through pass in the box from
Whitney Bickford and scoring from close range. It was her team-leading third goal of the season, while Bickford recorded her team-best eighth point.
Skidmore (3-3-1, 0-0-1 LL) struck first at the 12:40 mark, when Christina Sanzari chased down a loose ball in the Union zone, shed a defender, and broke in alone on the left side, buring a shot from 20 yards out. Skidmore finished with a 33-20 advantage in total shots. Nicole LoRusso came off the bench to record a game-high 10 shots, including four on net.
Mollie Gilchrist threatened to put Union ahead on three occassions, but had one shot deflect off the post, and two shots turned away in spectacular fashion by goalkeeper Deirdre Walsh. Gilchrist attempted a last-second shot in the box in the closing seconds, but was thwarted by the Thoroughbred defense.
Union goalkeeper
Allison Brustowicz made 12 saves to match her career high.
Union (6-1-1, 0-0-1 LL) will host Bard in a Liberty League matinee on Saturday.
