Pacheco scores in field hockey's 4-1 loss to RPI

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Four different players scored for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in a 4-1 Liberty League field hockey victory at Union College's Frank Bailey Field Saturday. The Engineers improved to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in league play while the Dutchwomen also stand 2-5 and are 0-2 in the league.

RPI had a 26-15 shot advantage for the game, but Union outsthot the guests 10-9 in the second half. Hannah Clough made nine saves in the RPI net while Danika Hornick stopped 13 in her first career goaltending action for Union. The Engineers had 12 penalty corners to Union's five.

RPI opened the scoring at 7:23 when Angela Cascio notched her second of the year. Her unassisted goal came when she picked up a loose ball in front and directed it in from close range. Just under a minute later, at 8:16, Nicole Clancy made it 2-0. Her first score of the season was shot past a diving Hornick, and it remained 2-0 at halftime.

Union got on the board and pulled to within one at 40:52. Laura Pacheco notched her second goal of the fall when she converted a pass from Hannah Najar and scored from 12 yards out. But RPI opened up the lead again at 61:11. Clancy passed to Kate Batzinger at the goalie's left post and Batzinger's first of the season made it 3-1. Jane Edgington closed out the scoring with her first at 69:36 for RPI, getting a loose ball in front and tucking it in close for the eventual 4-1 final.

Union opened a three game homestand and hosts Elms Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in a non-league contest. RPI also has a non-league game next up, against SUNY Geneseo on September 28 at 2 p.m.
