SCHENECTADY, NY - The Union College women's ice hockey program played to a 2-2 tie in an exhibition matchup with the Ottawa Junior Senators to open up the 2014-15 slate. Haley Wlech and
Hannah Erickson accounted for the goals for the Dutchwomen.
Ottawa began the scoring as Maggie Knott scored off the feed from Kimiko Marinacci to give the Junior Senators a one-goal advantage 5:09 minutes into the contest.
Welch notted the game up at 1-1 just over five mintutes later as the senior scored on a shot from just inside the blue line off the feed from
Christine Valente and
Kathryn Tomaselli.
Leah Buchanan was credited with the second goal of the game for the Sens as a Union defensemen lost control of the puck and allowed it to trickle into the net to give Ottawa the 2-1 edge at the 17:01 mark in the second period.
The Dutchwomen tied the game up at two goals a piece with 3:20 left in the second period as freshman
Hannah Erickson rifled her shot over the Ottawa goalie's shoulder and into the upper corner of the net for the second goal of the game for the "U."
The two squads remained scoreless for the remaining 28:20 minutes of the game as the exhibition contest ended in a 2-2 tie.
Senior netminder
Shenae Lundberg played the first period before being replaced by freshman
Alexx Ridding at the start of the second. Lundberg stopped four shots and allowed one goal in her 20 minutes on the ice. Ridding made 14 saves, including 10 stops in the third period, in her 45 minutes of action.
Union will open the regular season this Friday and Saturday as they travel to RIT for a two-game set. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00pm on Friday and 3:00pm on Saturday.
