CANTON, NY - Seniors
Christine Valente and
Alex Tancrell-Fontaine provided Union with a 2-0 lead with two second period goals but Union was unable to hang on as St. Lawrence rallied to defeat the Dutchwomen 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, Valente opened up the scoring as she potted her third goal on the season from just outside the crease 36 seconds into the second.
Kathryn Tomaselli and Tancrell-Fontaine picked up the assists for the Dutchwomen.
Tancrell-Fontaine found the scoring column just over five minutes later as the senior rifled home a shot from the top of the right circle to give Union a 2-0 edge 5:40 into the stanza. It was the third time she scored on the powerplay this season. Tomaselli picked up her second assist in the contest on the goal.
Hannah Miller would cut into the Dutchwomen lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in the second period.
The Saints evened the score 2:40 into the final period as Kennedy Merchant fired in a shot from inside the right circle.
Miller scored her second of the game with 5:43 left in regulation to give St. Lawrence a 3-2 advantage and Brooke Webster put in an empty-netter with 1:17 remaining to provide the 4-2 final.
Shenae Lundberg had her third highest save total of the season and her career in the defeat as the senior stopped 47 shots.
Union will be back in action next weekend as they play RPI in a home-and-home series. Friday night will be at Messa Rink with the opening faceoff scheduled for 7:00pm. Then on Saturday, the two programs will head to Houston Field House in Troy, NY to square off starting at 4:00pm.
