SCHENECTADY, NY --
Jenni Barra scored 22 points and
Cailin Schmeer tallied 17 with six assists and the Union College women's basketball team defeated Vassar College, 72-68 at the Viniar Athletic Center Friday night. It was the Liberty League opener for both teams, and Union is now 6-2 overall while the Brewers fell to 5-5.
Barra continued her big week and has 45 points in her last two games. Schmeer made 10 of 12 free throws and added a game best six assists with two steals.
Amy Fisher scored 12 points and
Natalie Leone added 10 points.
Kate Thompson had a team high seven rebounds with a career high five assists. Union shot 44%.
Caitlin Drakeley scored a game high 32 points for Vassar. She made 15 of 29 shots and also had five assists and three steals. Colleen O'Connell scored 16 points and Allyson Pemberton scored 10 for Vassar. The Brewers also shot 44% for the game.
Union had a strong start with a 12 point lead at 20-8 with 11:56 left in the first half. Union took a 43-36 lead into halftime. Union led by 11 after a three pointer by Barra 2:55 into the second half, but Vassar went on a 14-3 run in the next 7:01 to tie it up at 52-52. Union later led by seven at 63-56 with 4:50 left but Vassar got within one at 63-62 with 3:25 to play. Union made seven free throws the rest of the way en route to the victory.
The Dutchwomen host St. Lawrence Saturday at 2 p.m.
