Dutchmen start hot en route to 89-67 win over St. Lawrence

SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College men's basketball team jumped out to a 19-1 lead en route to an 89-67 Liberty League victory over the St. Lawrence Saints at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. Terell Winney scored 24 points as Union improved to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Saints now stand 6-4 and also 1-1 in the Liberty League.

Winney made eight of 13 shots and eight of 10 from the free throw line, and Kevin Weckworth had a career high 11 assists for Union. William Hython scored 19 (hitting six of his nine shots) with six rebounds and Deshon Burgess added 16 while joining Wade McNamara with a team high seven rebounds. McNamara's board total was a nerw career high. Union outrebounded St. Lawrence by nine, 41-32, and shot 55% including a 65% mark in the second half when the Dutchmen made 17 of 26 shots.

St. Lawrence was led by Bardy Condlin, who scored 23 with seven rebounds, and Kaleb Faison had a game high eight rebounds. The Saints shot 38% but hit 22 of 26 free throws for an 85% mark.

Union led 19-1 with 4:47 gone in the first half after a three pointer by Winney. The highest lead in the first half was 19 twice, at 27-8 with 9:20 left in the first half and 29-10 with 8:45 remaining in the first. Union took a 38-25 lead into the break and Winney had 18 points by halftime. The Saints got as close as nine just 42 seconds into the second half but Union opened it back up and the final 22 point margin was the largest lead of the night.

Union closed out a four game week today including the two contests at the Emory Tournament and last night's game vs. Vassar. The Dutchmen return to action Friday at RPI and then host Bard Saturday at 4 p.m.
