Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

St. Lawrence Booters Snap Union's Unbeaten Streak

CANTON, N.Y. - After snapping a scoreless tie with a goal in the final second of the first half, St. Lawrence University (10-3-2, 4-2) erupted for seven goals in the second half as the Saints rolled to an 8-0 Liberty League men's soccer victory over Union College (7-2-4, 1-1-3) on Saturday afternoon.
The Saints' victory snapped Union's eight-game unbeaten streak. The Dutchmen had posted a 5-0-3 record in their eight previous matches. St. Lawrence also scored eight goals against a normally-stingy Union defense, which had surrendered only six goals in its first 12 games.
The Saints and the Dutchmen battled on virtually even terms through most of the first half until one second remained in the first half. In the waning seconds of the half, senior Christian Yarros scored the first goal of the match on a corner kick with Luis Jiminez and Dan Hunt assisting.
St. Lawrence broke the game open early in the second half. Senior Jonathan Mendoza converted a penalty kick at 52:52, starting a big second half. Four minutes later, sophomore Chandler Stout scored to give the Saints a 3-0 advantage. With 21:10 remaining, Mendoza's second goal of the game padded the lead to 4-0 and set the stage for a wild finish.
In the final 11:57 of the match, St. Lawrence scored four more goals to win by an 8-0 final score. The Saints' eight goals were one short of the school record that was set in 1969 against St. Michael's.
Senior Harry Copeland gave the Saints a 5-0 lead at 78:03 when he scored off a pass from Mendoza. A goal by Praveen Balakumaran 33 seconds later put the Saints ahead by 6-0. Copeland's second goal of the game, off a header, put the Saints ahead by 7-0. With 4:19 left, the Saints were awarded a penalty kick. After freshman goalkeeper Jonathan Grazosi made the intitial save, Hunt scored on the rebound for the 8-0 final score.
St. Lawrence outshot the Dutchmen by a 24-3 margin. Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Weitzman made three saves for Union in 78 minutes of action. Grazosi made two saves in 12 minutes.
Union College returns to action on Wednesday, October 21 when the Dutchmen host Alfred University at 7:00 p.m.
